Call for Papers. Gender Equity Symposium. Closes Monday 3 October 2022. Background image: woman crossing the road at a yellow pedestrian crossing.

On Friday 2 December the Melbourne Social Equity Institute will host a one-day symposium focused on gender equity research across a range of disciplinary and methodological approaches.

Evidence shows improved gender equity reduces violence, fosters economic prosperity and institutional integrity, and advances social and economic innovation.  The unequal status of women and girls has long been understood as both a central cause and consequence of social inequity, with more recent movements highlighting the negative effect of rigid gender norms on members of the LGBTIAQ+ community. Similarly, gender inequality and the social norms and structural practices underpinning it are increasingly recognised as factors impacting men's and boys’ wellbeing.

This symposium aims to bring together graduate and early career researchers from across the University of Melbourne whose work is focused on issues of gender equity to share their research, build new networks and discuss issues of shared interest and concern.

This is a free symposium open to students and staff affiliated with the University of Melbourne. A light lunch will be provided at no cost.

Call for Papers

This one-day symposium is intended to accommodate graduate and early career researchers* based at the University of Melbourne. Submissions from all disciplinary backgrounds are invited.

As well as presenting research findings, the focus of presentations may include:

  • Work in progress updates
  • Literature review connected to the gaps where your research sits
  • Conceptual ideas
  • Research design (e.g. methods of data collection that support women and girls’ voices in research)
  • Ethical challenges.

Three different formats will be in operation at this symposium:

  • 15-minute oral presentation in person (+ 5 minutes of question time)
  • 5-minute oral presentation in person (+ 5 minutes of question time)
This option should provide a quick snapshot of your work or research still in the early stages of a project
  • 15-minute oral presentation online (+ a 30-second trailer)
For researchers unable to attend the symposium in person. Pre-recorded presentations will be uploaded to the conference website and the 30-second recorded trailer introducing your work will be played during the symposium

Please note that presentation lengths may be limited by the organisers depending on the time available.

Abstract submissions of 150-200 words (accompanied by a brief biography) are requested by 12pm AEDT on Monday 3 October 2022.
