Learn about the past and present situation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Since 2014, the Melbourne Social Equity Institute and Researchers for Asylum Seekers have run the Lecture Series for Asylum Seekers (LSAS).

Every Monday night for six weeks there will be two lectures on Australian society and culture. Each lecture will be 20 minutes and delivered by an academic from the University of Melbourne. The lectures will be followed by a break for tea, coffee and food, then we will have a small group discussion about the topic with student volunteers from the university.

Each week there will be a different topic. All the lectures will be in English, but the student volunteers can provide assistance in the small group discussions if you do not understand something.

Who can attend?

These lectures are designed for asylum seekers and refugees who have recently arrived in Australia. However, anyone who is interested in understanding more about Australian culture, history and society is welcome. You may attend one or many lectures.

Other information

Participation is free.

Food, tea and coffee will be provided.

You will receive a certificate of participation if you attend three or more lectures.
