Professor Bernadette McSherry wins top Australasian award

Professor Bernadette McSherry won an Exceptional Contribution TheMHS Award in the 2016 TheMHS Awards program for service in mental health.

It was given in recognition of her research and advocacy work in relation to law and human rights in mental health services. It was one of 8 Awards made in the Service and Program categories, 3 for Exceptional Contribution, 3 for research and 4 for Media.

The Award was announced 25th August at the Annual TheMHS Conference held this year in Auckland, New Zealand. It was presented to Professor McSherry by Kevin Allan, the Mental Health Commissioner, Office of the Health and Disability Commissioner, New Zealand.

Professor McSherry is the Foundation Director of the Melbourne Social Equity Institute and an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne and the Faculty of Law, Monash University. She is the President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law; a legal member of the Victorian Mental Health Tribunal and the author and editor of over 260 works on mental health law and criminal law.

TheMHS Awards are presented every year by TheMHS Learning Network to recognise and encourage best practice, excellence and innovation in mental health service delivery. The Awards have been made annually since 1992.

TheMHS Conference is the largest mental health and addiction services conference in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. TheMHS aims to promote positive attitudes about mental health and mental illness, and to stimulate debate that challenges the boundaries of knowledge and ideas about mental health care.
